My marine tank as at 23 Oct 11

My tanks as at 23 Oct 11:

The two casualties: one Azure Damselfish and one Green Chromis in the bottom tanks been eaten up by the lionfish. I think it is the lionfish because the stomach of the lionfish is sooo... fat the next day when I discovered my fish is missing.

I also realised the lionfish does not eat clownfish, I think the clownfish produces some form of protection on their skin, the same protection that allows them to live in Anemone. So the lionfish will not eat them. Therefore, decided to add two more clown fish to the bottom tanks.

Seahorses

Last few posts ago, I mentioned on I am working on  a project which I have been running for months, it is the seahorses. It have been more than 3 months since I started keeping seahorse. One of my seahorse gives birth in beginning of October.

I will next time discuss on how to keep a seahorses, it is not so difficult as it thinks.

Popeye Part 4

I have been busy recently due to my work.

This part, I will discuss what I do when my sweetlips has popeye on one of its eyes. Since my sweelips are eating well so I did the following:

1.  20% Water change every 5 days
2.  Mix the foods with Vitamins and  GarlicGuard
3. Most importantly mix foods with SeaChem KanaPlex.

Follow this regiment for 2-3 weeks, the problem will be greatly reduced. As for my sweetlips, the eye never get de-swell but it becomes healthy again.

Product Description
KanaPlex™ is a blended kanamycin based medication that safely and effectively treats several fungal, and bacterial fish diseases (dropsy, popeye, fin/tail rot, septicemica). Because it is absorbed by fish it is useful in treating internal infections in those situations where food is refused. It does not adversely affect the filter bed and is easily removed with carbon. To enhance palatability use with GarlicGuard. Food may be refrozen. For use in freshwater or marine aquaria.

Active ingredients: kanamycin sulfate (40%). Inactive ingredients: potassium sulfate (60%)

I have 2 Kanaplex to spare, if you need it urgently, just reply to me.  The Kanaplex has been added to the DIY food.

Product review: Ocean Free OF Hydra 30 Internal Filter

I am very impressed with one equipment that is OF Hydra 30 internal filter that I brought during Aquarama 2011. It is located at the bottom tank if you see it in the video. Note that both tanks are linked.

However, you need to let it run for a few months to see the results. I will buy the bigger version when the higher version is out.

Popeye Part 3

Treatments:
1. Water quality:
As any diseases are always linked to poor water quality or environmental conditions, a good regimen of water change must be practised. If the diseases/popeye is linked to water quality, then I suggest 5 to 10% daily water changes or a 10 to 30% per every 2-3 days is recommended until inflected fish shows signs of improvement, I suggest you should continue for a period of 2 weeks before thinking/doing the next course of actions.

2. Foods:
If the inflected fish is still eating, a oral feedings of foods soaked in selcon or/and another type of liquid vitamin or/and garlic, along with different types of foods mixed  such as fresh, frozen, pellet, etc should be administrated.  Different types of foods have different type of  nutrients/vitamins etc. It will increase its immure system to fight against any diseases.

If the fish is not eating, add liquid vitamin into the tank, the gills will absorb some of the vitamin, although it is not so effective, but at least it is still worth a try to improve the health of the fish.

3. Medicine
The inflected fish can be treated with a broad spectrum topical antibiotic, such as skin absorbed kanamycin sulfate based antibiotics like Aquatronics' Kanacyn or Spectrogram, as well as Neomycin, and Maracyn or Maracyn-Two. Some medicines will effect the biological filter.

Just a note:
Early intervention or treatments will improve the chances of recovery. Sometimes, the inflected fish does respond to treatment and survives with both eyes blinded, it will most likely perish because it cannot see to locate food and will usually die from starvation, I have one case with my Schooling Bannerfish. that eventually died from starvation, it is very sad to see he died this way as we could not perform Fish euthanasia on it. We also learn a lot from this case.

There are also some cases that the fish ended up with the one popeye that could not be de-swollen, the fish will still survives and grows. I have a case, my sweetlips with one popeye is still eating and growing bigger every days.

Next part (Part 4), I will discuss what I do when my sweetlips has popeye on one of its eyes.
